Ode Marine
From waves to sound waves. A sound art project on marine ecosystems.
In this second iteration of Anissa Boukili’s study on the relation between waves and sound, Ode Marine approached the concept from a social/ecological perspective, underlining globalization and human interference on ecosystems.
To express this, Anissa Boukili worked in collaboration with a team of marine biologists and technology specialists to measure 5 different parameters of waves that would then be turned into sound. Setting out to sea on a sailboat starting from Tadoussac, QC, the team collected data in various places and documented the process for the sake of making a short film.
Turning data into sound.
My approach for this project consisted of using Max MSP to convert the spreadsheet data into MIDI format that could then be assigned to any given parameter in a DAW or virtual instrument.
Our second step, gathering sound materials, was done in a studio with a Moroccan mandolin player and a classically trained pianist.
The results combined faraway aesthetics into a fluid composition extending over 15 minutes between rhythm oriented sections and purely abstract electronic sounds.
